For this quarter, I have came to class prepared for class. I don't pack my books up before class ends or always ask to leave to the restroom every single day. I also check my communication and comunicate properly with the teacher. I also turn in assingments on time, and hardly late.

I never talk in class whenever Dr.D is talking to us. I take good notes in class, but I often get caught up in listening to my classmate's conversations. I don't distract other or make silly comments to throw the kids off track. I also am helpful when it comes to group projects and things with my classmates. I haven't really been extremely communicative but I have developed through the course of the two quarters.

Study Plan

Final Exam Study Plan

For this year's final English exam, I have developed a good strategy to help me prepare for the exam. I assigned certain specific things to review even past notes from the 1st semester. I have realized that it is important to go back over past assignments, and test corrections. There are dead days coming up as well which is a big plus but I still am going to keep the same plan.

Things that I think that everyone should take in consideration:
-Don't cram so much to study in one whole day
-Review notes that are beneficial to you
-Go to your teachers or advisors for help
-Go to as many study tutorial sessions as possible
-Try to review as many test as possible because there are some things from the previous test that have a high likely hood of being on the exam

Reflection of this Year's Reading

This year, I felt as though I've expanded my interest level to all kinds of different types of books.  I also have increased my reading level as well. Mainly before this year, I read about books that have a lot of violence and mystery.  I normally tend to lose interest in the book after a while because I already know whats going to happen at the end.  And I also know that the pages are too lengthy.  Although, I recieved a huge wake up call my freshman year.  I didn't really expect to be reading all types of genres such as romantic, allegories, epic, and books related to historic periods(slavery).  Most of them were very lengthy.  Some were around the range of 300 to 400 pages long, and they weren't the easiest to read.  There were certain details that you couldn't miss.  So I spent a lot of extra time rereading to get a vivid image of what was going on.
With posting outside reading this year, I feel way more comfortable with certain issues now.  I've found different strategies and techniques to sort out the important themes and plots of stories.  I've learned a lot this year and improved skills that I was weak in.  Certain skills like understanding certain literary devices and elements in books are now clear to me.  I also tend to not lose focus in books, and keep on reading.  With the expansion of the variety of genres read, I now have increased my reading skills better than before.  For example, I am reading a new book now called Prospector.  It isn't really a book that would interest me before my freshman year.  Although now, this type of book which is a romantic book about how a embarrising kid similar to a steve eurkal type character.  It also is a comedy.  Any way what I'm trying to say is that this year has improved my reading comprehensive skills and has made me comfortable to stepout of my comfort zone.

Perspective of Macbeth

With I being, Macbeth, I am awaiting to be given the title of being king meteorically.  There are only a few obstacles in my path.  I've eliminated king Duncan,  and the next person I'm aiming for is Malcom.  Also I need to get rid of this guilt that is on my back from killing Duncan.  Once, I've been honored and cleared from my dirty deeds I will be crowned.  Not just the title, but also the abundance of wealth.  As well as the pouring of endowments power in my lap.
There has been a horrible thing that has been following me.  I've speared my fellow partner.  Who was a noble king.  I shouldn't have given into the guilty thoughts of me becoming king right away.  With having to deal with this, I regret every moment.  I should have waited in line instead of taking out one of my trustworthy friends.  I am terribly sorry for this, but the riches!!!  It was a hard descision, and I couldn't let my Lady down.

Writing Over The Year; Reflection

English

English has always been one of my favorite subjects since the 1st grade. I've always enjoyed writing wether it was poetry, papers, homework, whatever the case was I enjoyed it. I love jotting down thoughts in my mind because it's like a sign of relief for me. When I was in middle school, I really didn't have trouble writing papers in eight grade. Althoug, I did have trouble with fixing certain tools in my papers. I didn't think that those problems would be a big challenge for me so I overlooked them. When I arrived to ninth grade, I didn't really think that it would be any worst than eight grade. But I had another thing coming. After the first paper, I got a huge wake up call, and knew that it was time for me to step my game up.

Over the course of the year, in English class, we have written many papers that dealt with many different interesting topics. The types of papers that we did were Research Papers,Global Issue Papers, Profiles, Literary Narratives, and Literary Analyses. Some of the papers such as the Research papers, Literary Narrative and the Profile assignments weren't that difficult for me. Those three were actually easier for me because my eight grade teacher use to make us do different types of papers and critic types of papers like these. So, I already had a vision of the paper, and wasn't really stressed about it being new to me. I also enjoyed writing about my mother's career as a teacher, my struggles with writing styles, and the anti-death penalty. These topics were some that Dr. D gave us the chance to select out of. And when we were doing them I chose them because I enjoyed having the opportunity to choose a topic which is interesting to me. Although, my bad habits from my eight grade year came back to haunt me. I had a difficult time with conventions in these three essays. I did a poor job with using an effective voice and using particular conventions. Now I've gotten rid of these bad habits and only use certain techniques such as cognitive and affective approaches to help develop my papers.

Also I had a difficult time with the Global Issues Paper, and the Literary Analysis Paper. I didn't really have a good feel for how to develop a strong thesis and facts that actually back up the statement. I always had to start over and over again when it came to my thesis statement for both papers. And this carried over to me having trouble with my organization. I was uncertain where to put certain facts and I was kind of stressed. The Literary Analyses for example was the paper that I lost points on in these three areas because I had a difficult time when it came to supporting the whole topic. I also think that it was harder than the Global Issues paper because it was a paper that I wasn't that familiar with.

One particular thing that really got to me, was adding your cited sources inside your Global Issues paper. Every year, I've did papers on research and thought that this was going to be like any other one i've done in the past. Although, I didn't realize that citing sources would have been difficult for me. The different ways that you had to cite the sources by the places that you collectted the information from was defintley a struggle. I was putting certain cited sources in the wrong format which could've cost me points off on my Global Issues Paper. Although, I'm glad that we had a chance to go to Dr. D for help because that sure did benefit me. Now I know how to cite the sources from magzines, books, newspapers, web pages, and etc. way better.

From reviewing all of the papers that i've completed in the past, I've noticed that I have three strong strengths and three weakenesses. From the general comments that I've recieved, I noticed that my strengths were in Sentence Structure, Word Choice, Ideas and Mechanics. I felt that with the Profile, Literary Analyses, and the Global Issues Paper I did a good job drawing interest with my ideas in these three papers. And I also supported them well which lead to the sentences flowing together quite nicely. Although, I also noticed many weakenesses as well. I often have errors in my papers with Organization, Voice, and Conventions. I've been struggling with organization sometimes because I feel the need to talk about so much. And I often seperate important information into the wrong places. I also lose control of my voice sometimes. I didn't have that buisness like approach when presenting. I had a laid back type of approach which wasn't very affective at all. Also there were certain little punctuations and grammar that i needed to tighten on. Although with the the help from Dr. D, I'm learning from these mistakes and improving my self into a stronger writter.

Last year, I didn't take the WRAP test at all last year. I took a differetn types of test, btu i feel way more proud of myself this year because I did way better. I got 4's and 4.5's on every category except conventions. I feel that on some sentences i tried to fit too much information and it ended up leading to fragments. But I feel that I did a good job with Mechanics, Word Choice, Organization, Overall Development and Sentence Structure. I think that all of these scroes were high because I had an interest for the topic. It was so much easier with having a interest for the topic. I expected the scores to be this way because i felt as though I've achieved my goal in getting rid of these the old habbits I had before highs school, and developing better ones. Which will improve my skills.

Song Analysis; Drake "Find Your Love"

Find Your Love Lyrics: Drake

[Drake]
I’m more than just an option
Hey, Hey, Hey
refuse to be forgotten
Hey, Hey, Hey
I took a chance with my heart
Hey, Hey, Hey
And I feel it taking over

[Chrous]
I better find your lovin’
I better find your heart
I better find your lovin’
I better find your heart
I better find your lovin’
I better find your heart
I bet if i give all my love
then nothings gonna tear us apart

I’m more than just a number
Hey, Hey, Hey
I doubt you’ll find another
Hey, Hey, Hey
so every single summer
Hey, Hey, Hey
I be the one that you remember

[Chrous]
and I better find your lovin
I better find your heart
I better find your lovin
I better find your heart
I better find your lovin
I better find your heart
I bet if i give all my love,
then nothings gonna tear us apart

it’s more than just a mission
Hey, Hey, Hey
you hear but you don’t listen
Hey, Hey, Hey
You better pay attention
Hey, Hey, Hey
and get what you been missing

[Chorus]

too many times I’ve been wrong
I guess being right takes too long

I’m done waiting,

theres nothing left to do

but give all I have to you and

I better find your lovin
I better find your heart
I better find your lovin
I bet if I give all my love,
then nothings gonna tear us apart

I bet if I give all my love,
then nothings gonna tear us apart
[End]

This song that i chose is one of the hits by one of the most popular artist in today's music industry, Drake. The song is titled "Find Your Love". I am a big fan of Drake and this song is one of my favorites from the album before his previous one called, "Thank Me Later". This song is the second single from the album and it was helped produced by Kanye West. Drake and Kanye West designed the song which has sort of a similar pop tune. It was way different from the other songs because this one poured out his feelings about his lifestyle dealing with women and relationships. There were many phrases such as "I better find your loving" and "I better find your heart". These lines showed repitition all throughout the chorus to symbolize that he is sick and tired of falling at first sight with the women that isn't mrs.right for him. I noticed that there were a few rhyme schemes as well. In verse one Drake sings," I’m more than just a number/ Hey, Hey, Hey/I doubt you'll find another/Hey, Hey, Hey/So every single summer/Hey, Hey, Hey/I be the one that you remember." I think that this verse is similar to a Monorhyme. Also an example of "ABAB" would be when Drake sings in the 2nd verse," It's more than just a mission/ Hey, Hey, Hey/You hear but you don't listen/ Hey, Hey, Hey/You better pay attention/Hey, Hey, Hey/ and get what you been missing." The words mission and attention both have that particular sound. As well as the words listen and mising from the verses which make up that the rhyme scheme is "ABAB".

In Drake's opening verse, which is verse one,"I'm more then just an option/ Hey, Hey, Hey/ Refuse to be forgotten/ Hey, Hey, Het// I took a chance with my heart/ Hey, Hey, Hey/ And I feel it taking over." I feel that he is trying to show that he wants to have a major impact on people in a way that they will stay for both the relationship and his music. Also I feel that when he says that, " And I feel it taking over" he is referring to previuos experience or a present relationship and how he has risked his time for this woman. So now he feels confident and positive that his heart made the right descision, and now he is going to let his heart lead the way because he's in perfect condition with this woman. Another thing that I noticed in the song was the way that the Chorus before last begins to change a bit. He stops the mood and tells the woman that" Too many times I've been wrong/ I guess being right takes too long/ I'm done waiting/ Theres nothing left to do but give all I have to you." This statement by Drake indicates that too many times he has constantly fallen for the wrong woman. This has been going on for a while now and he can't stop because of his anxiousness. He is determinded to find the right woman and end his quest for love once and for all. Overall this song by Drake was to show how even though Drake didn't have success in his previous relationships that he'll continue his journey to search for the right woman for him.

Outside Reading

I have just got through reading from chapter four to eight. The chapters seemed to get lenghty at the end but I enjoyed them. I didn't enjoy them as much as I did the first few but they were ok. There weren't as many clues that caught my eye these few chapters but i did notice one that had me on the heels of my feet. Warrent gets into the poetry club thats after school, and bonds with the group. Warrent develops good skills when it comes to rhyming words and relating phrases. A similar person in the group who has the same interest as Warrent is named Johnnie Blackberry. Johnnie is in the 11th grade and makes a rap group. Their name is the Bombshells. Johnnie takes him under his wing and adds Warrent to the group. Warrent begins to recieve gifts from Johnnie such as exclusive track gear, and the latest shoes. I hope this doesn't go to far, and Warrent begins to get into the things that Johnnie is doing. The story is getting quite interesting and is keeping me curious.

Grams finds out about the gifts beause Johnnie came to their door one mourning to bring him to school in his dodge charger. Grams recognizes the boy beause she taught his mother, father, and cousins at Polk Senior High School in Queens. She told Warrent that he needs to stay away from them because he is a bad seeds. His brother and him were on the news for robbing a corner store and injuring 4 people who worked at the store. She said that they are nothing but trouble. I kind of figured that he was a dealing with violence because he has the nicest car, duffle bags of money, alcohol in his car, and cigarettes. His name also speaks for itself although their is a twist to it. His name is Johnnie Blackberry, I kind of think that because in most cartoons the anti good ones wear black, and that sexactly what he wears. He isn't really goth he just has his own style. Similar to Johnnie Appleseed, he wants to spread their music all throughout the streets of New York and expand another buisness that he's heavily investing in. He never told Warrent what type but he said it was very important.

Outside reading

I've just started reading a book called, "Promises". "Promises" is a story about a underprivellaged who stays in some of the worst conditions in the whole state of new York. His enviorment isn't the best but he seems to have a good understanding of what is right from wrong. His parents are not always there for him. They are hooked on drugs and are never home. So the main character, Warrent leaves the house and goes next door to a women named Grams. Grams isn't really Warrent's grandmother, she is actually a close friend of the family that knows their conditions and wants Warrent to strive. Often times he seems to struggle but Grams always keeps him on track. She always tells him to "Stay on the track." Overall this is actually a good story. It contains some violence here and there but is a real heart warming book. I have only read the first three chapters and it has pulled me in. My interest level has increaded drastically. I love the way the author also known as Warrent tells the story. He has a great personality, and is a very mature kid to say that he is only in the ninth grade. I would advise this book to many readers who follow Paul Langan because the author tells us before you read that he is one of her insperations.

I like how the author uses a lot of different techniques throughout the story. Warrent is actually a track star at his school, and Grams wants him to be successful in that as well but also tells him to stay on track with your education. The author also uses imagery when she talks to Warrent about her parents and how they got addicted to the wrong things even though they were high school scholars in education and sports. And she tells him that she wants him to be her "vow". I noticed that promise also a synonym of a vow. Also his name as well. The author doesn't just use imagery. She also shows us symbolism with certain things that Grams shows Warrent when he comes over. She gives him old poems that she use to write about hard times that she has. And it seems that the poems let loose Warrent's anger with his parents addictions. They are very powerful and I figure that since these poems have such an impact on him that he will eventually begin to write about his problems because he is thinking about joining a rap group after school.

Poem Analysis on "Fifth Grade Autobiography" by Rita Dove

"Fifth Grade Autobiography" by Rita Dove

I was four in this photograph fishing
with my grandparents at a lake in Michigan.
My brother squats in poison ivy.
His Davy Crockett cap
sits squared on his head so the raccoon tail
flounces down the back of his sailor suit.

My grandfather sits to the far right
in a folding chair,
and I know his left hand is on
the tobacco in his pants pocket
because I used to wrap it for him
every Christmas. Grandmother's hips
bulge from the brush, she's leaning
into the ice chest, sun through the trees
printing her dress with soft
luminous paws.

I am staring jealously at my brother
the day before he rode his first horse, alone.
I was strapped in a basket
behing my grandfather.
He smelled of lemons. He's died----

but I remember his hands.

I just got finished reading the poem called "Fifth Grade Autobiography" by Rita Dove from our poetry book. From glancing at the title of the poem, I figured it is about someone's past events from fifth grade. I wasn't really sure about what type of poem it was but I think I have a good picture of what it was.

Once I read "Fifth Grade Autobiography", I noticed a lot of different things afterwards. I saw that it was actually a narrative poem which was one of my particular guesses. It is a story that was told about and around a certain picture which describes the enjoyable moments with the family. I was wondering also if the title "Fifth Grade Autobiography" was relevant to like when she was looking through a old template that had her fifth grade experiences. Also I circled many examples of emjambments from a few stanzas.I noticed a lot of imagery in certain stanzas, particularly stanza's 1 and 2. The next one that follwed two which contained a few words that stuck out which revealed feelings toward her brother. At the end of the poem, the poem did a good job to me at exhibiting caesuras which puts like a bold print on the last few words of the line to show more emphasis. In this poem the author does so by describing her grandfather's hand.

Outside Reading

I have been reading this book for about 4 weeks now. And I have finally got through the whole book. To be honest this was a book that took time and patience to read. The story was hard to read, but I enjoyed it a lot. The story was told by two different main characters and their outlooks were so different from each other. It took me several times to grasp the main concept of the story. Although, I don't think that it is impossible to read. I just think that you would have to have the ability to focus no matter what and remember key events in the story so won't be lost.

The one thing that I loved most about this book was the way the main character made his family and his community proud. He went through so much adversity through out the book and never complained. He always found a way to get his self out of it and sometimes it wasn't the easy way. He did so much for himself and for the community as well. He grew up from a developing boy into a man. He is providing for his family and community which is a huge accomplishment.

Poetry

We have just started doing poetry this this week and I am so excited!! Mainly because I have always have a thing for poetry since my elemetary days. I never really learned about the different styles, but I always loved rythming. I liked telling stories in a rythmical way. I use to put words together because of the way they sounded and their meaning. I thought writing poetry was so cool. And I am glad that we are learning this because now I will develop knowledge of how to write different styles.

Ever since I've been in the second grade, I've enjoyed writing poetry. I actually did a poem in second grade that placed third in the state. It was only three lines about the colors of leaves in the fall, but it sounded good. When I was young, I always did poems for my journal entries because I loved telling vivid stories of what I'm thinking.

Things Fall Apart

I've previously just read chapters  2 through 3 and I like how the author portrays the story.  the author shows how the main character faces challenges with the absence of his father, and decsion making skills.  The main character doesn't do a good job of making good choices, and he learns the hard way.  Although, he hasn't really had his father in his life.  Most of the time he is learning on his own.
I wonder if the main character will get back up on his feet, and continue his destiny toward making a name for himself and his villeage.  Most of the characters I've read about in previous books have overcame these struggles, btu this character is slowly developing how to make good choices.  I hope this doesn't end well, and leads him to a dark path.

Saint Patrick's Day

Today, is St. “Paddy’s” Day you guys.  St. Paddy Day is a nickname that comes from St. Patrick’s Day.  St. Paddy’s Day is a western holiday that is always celebrated on March 17.  St. Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland and he passed on March 17, so we dedicate this event to him.  Most people come out and decorate floats to exhibit at various parades.  They also throw different green items for everyone to wear and put on.  Many people come out to these parades to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day.
When I woke up today, I was ecstatic.  I couldn’t wait to brush my teeth, and put some green clothes on with anything else I had that was green.  My family and I went to 2 parades and enjoyed every minute of them.  There were different floats with creative green designs.  I collected a lot of green stuff, but my youngest sister snatched them from me because they didn’t have as much.  I also got a chance to watch a couple of NCAA March Madness games.  I feel kind of bad for the guys who have to play on St. Paddy’s Day because they don’t get the opportunity to go out with their families and go to the parades.  Especially, if they lost and got put out of the tournament.  Any ways, I noticed many college basketball teams had their sponsorships from the various shoe companies send them yellow, and green attire.  Some of the coaches, and players wore green and yellow shoes.  I also thought that the green Baylor jerseys were cool as well. It was a really fun day for me, and I can’t wait for it to come around next year.

Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

Yesterday, I went on a walk that supported Breast Cancer.  Originally, I didn’t want to wake up 7:00 in the mourning to walk for about 3 hours.  Although my attitude changed once I arrived at LSU.  As I began walking I noticed how many survivors were out there walking showing their tremendous accomplishment.  Also there were many family members with shirts and tags that show that they are running and walking for their family/ friends.  I was amazed by the number of people that were out there.
I am glad that none of my family members were diagnosed with cancer, but I still ran to support the cause.
One thing that stuck out to me at the walk was primarily was what they did for the surviving cancer patients after they finished the walk.  After they finished completing the walk, they set up an entrance for the survivors which lead to a bunch of surprises.  There, they handed out medals, roses, and many other prizes for completing the course.  You could feel the compassion from the survivors by the way that tears strolled down their faces.  It was a beautiful sight to see, and I’m glad that I was apart of this moment which changed people lives.

Things Fall Apart

For the last three days, I’ve just started reading my new outside reading book called, “Things fall Apart”.  I really enjoyed the first chapter of the book.  At first I thought it was going to be dull, but it caught me off guard.  I would advise many people to take a chance at reading this book.
One of the main characters in the book named, Okonkwo was a respected fighter of his clan, and a rich man.  Okonkwo brought much pride by beating a huge panther in a wrestling contest.  This panther wasn’t like any other panther.  This panther was undefeated for seven consecutive years.  Although Okonkwo grew up in a rough enviorment, his father sometimes spent all of his money which made his family poor at times.

NC

Nervous Conditions

My feelings about how good and bad Nervous Conditions was are in the middle.  I am happy to get it over with.  Mainly because I didn’t really like reading the beginning.  I got confused so many times and reread it about 5 times.  When it got to the end, my interest level began to pick up, and I realized why so many people said that it was such a tremendous book.  The author did an amazing job writing this book.  She exposed all of the characters conditions in hidden parts of the story.  And these conditions actually linked back to the title of the book.  These conditions fit the characters really well, and I enjoyed reading about their different situations.  To read this book, you had to be focused at all times because you never know when something that could be anywhere in a paragraph could lead to a huge rise in the climax of the story.  Their also was a lot of conflict in the story.  So you had to pay attention to the way certain character’s mood were, their voice, and patterns in their words.  I felt that the characters problems made it more interesting even though it showed ways that they couldn’t survive without each other.
This story also was good because of the way it portrayed it as a tragedy in the way women are treated in society.  I mean women shouldn’t be treated that way but this tory exposes how cultures once felt this way.   They felt that the man of the family was always in charge and the women took the backseat.  Males were going to go to school while the women were going to help pick for food.  It is a very diffivult time period for Nyasha, and by the way that she overcame these limitations.  It made her that much stronger

Track

Even though, I love to play basketball.  I also love to run track.  I have ran track for about two years now.  I have done high jump, long jump, triple jump, and ran the 400.  I have had success in all of the events that I’ve ran so far.  I was very comfortable with my old coaches at my old school because they were my coaches in basketball and football, as well.  Although they didn’t know very much they gave me an idea and I began to blossom. I placed in almost every event that I did.  And I hoped to carry my success toward EHS.
Although now, I’m with a whole new coaching staff, new season (varsity), and I’m a little bit rusty.  I am starting to adapt to the new coaching staff at EHS this year.  I enjoy working with my coaches and they are teaching me way more then my previous coaches.  I am learning different techniques, and I’m getting better as I start to get a better understanding of jumping/running.  Coach Hat, and coach Duke have really taught me a lot in these last few days.  Even though at the recent track meet, I didn’t place.  I’m improving with the basics which will advance me and put my skills to the next level.  And I have to take in account that unlike middle school, I’m competing against mainly juniors and seniors.  I’m barely missing the chance to place but in long jump and high jump yesterday.  I had the opportunity to get 3rd and 4th.  But without those missing skills, I’m running out of chances at placing.  But like my coaches said, I’m going to get there soon.  All I need is a little more practice.  Then I will be able to show off my skills better.

Whitney Houston will be missed

A few weeks ago, one of the most memorable singers of all time pasted away.  She was a African-American who was known for being a producer, actress, actor, and a model.  She was one of the best-selling music artist that have sold over 170 million singles, and videos across the globe.  She also was awarded in 2009 as the most-awarded female artist of all-time.  She has sold seven albums that turned diamond, mulit-platinum, platinum, and gold.
If you haven’t guessed already guessed, this famous artist was Whitney Houston.  Whitney Houston changed the music industry with her beautiful voice and has inspired many young artist, as well.  She actually took a tour around the world and gave out speeches and lessons to various amateur up incoming artist.  She has changed many people’s lives around the world, and I applaud Whitney Houston for her career, and what all she has done for many people.  I remember my 5th grade graduation, my teacher made us practice a Whitney Houston song for the graduation.  None of us really wanted to sing it, but when it was time for the graduation the song really brought us together.  I remember a lot of people crying and how the song made others that more determined to strive for greatness.  Now as the years go by, I still remember that song till this day (Greatest Love of All).

Nervous Conditions during the break

During the long Mardi Gras break, I got a chance to play in some exciting playoff basketball games but I also spent most of my free time reviewing Nervous Conditions.  Even though, I could have done other things.  I chose to strive to capture a better understanding, and I actually got a lot out of it, as well.   I annotated a lot of passages and key phrases which gave me a better understanding.  I also found out that chapter review questions from 6 and 7 also helped me out. Certain questions made me think more and it cleared certain blurry questions that filled my mind over the break.  Even though it was a lot to read, I used my time really well.  I read in the car after I had practice and while the rain was raining the day of some parades.  This week was great, I got a lot of things complete and feel as though I used my time very well.

Both of the chapters were good to me, but chapter 7 kind of caught me off guard.   Certain things are changing, and Tambu’s mother seems to be depressed.  I was thinking that she may have been depressed because her kids have left.  She also may be acting this way because she didn’t get the chance of a life time like Tambu has now(education).  But that may not be the case because usually parents would be happy for their children receiving education.  I hope that Tambu’s mother doesn’t past, and she gets better soon.

Memphis!!

This weekend, I got the chance to go with my family for a little road trip.  We went to Memphis, Tennesse to visit my grandmother.  I had a great time with her even though I only had 2 and a half days to spend with her.  We played games like monoploy, checkers, and connect 4.  Usually when I was little I use to win, but she beat me bad in everyone of them.  I'm beginning to think that she was letting me win because she was beating me to easy.  She also shared with us old stories about her child hood adventures when she was a kd.  I loved hearign her stories because she adds a little excitement to them to keep you awake.  I love her so much, and I can't wait to see her again.
Before I got the chance to leave, my grandmother offered my father and I to a college basketball game.  She knew I loved Memphis University and basketall so she bought two tickets.  She said that she couldn't come because of the high flights of stairs.  My father and I enjoyed the game a lot.  And I'm glad that my grandmother did something so special for me.  That was one of the most charishable moments of my life.

This Week

This week we hand in our rough draft of the world issue research paper. We also finished chapter two and chapter three of Nervous Conditions.

This week, we submitted our rough drafts on our global issue's paper.  I am kind of confident that i did pretty well on it. I feel confident with the way I used good voice, organized it pretty well, and interpreted the issue very well.  Although this was my first written copy of my paper.  Although I made a mistakes with certain cited quotations, and a few gramatical errors.  I'm glad I recognized these issues so that when the final draft comes.  I will have all of these mistakes cleaned up.
This week we have also been getting into more depth with our new book called Nervous Conditions.  We have also advanced to chapter 4.  The story is beginning to change as it progresses with Tambu authoring the story.  I like the way that Tambu desccribes the story because of how sassy she is and how she feels like whatever she says matters.

Nervous Conditions; Chapter 1

This week my English class started reading about this new book called, "Nervous Conditions."  I wasn't that excited to hear that we were reading about it, and the cover didn't give me that spark to alter my interest level.  Although like my mother always tells me, "Don't judge a book by it's cover".  Usually this deals with a person's personality but I'm relating it to what first pops in your head.  Well Nervous Conditions is about this young girl named, Tambu.  Tambu goes through many struggles in life with her family’s setting and her heritage.
While reading chapter one of Nervous Conditions, I gathered a lot of information.  I noticed that Tambu isn’t showing much sorrow for her brother death.  She kind of brushes the whole incident off.  She is mainly mad at the way her brother, Nahmo was acting once he came home for a visit.  Nahmo turns away from his family with the attitude as though he is better than them.  He does some cruel things as well.  For example, he acts pushy by thrashing the girls and forcing them to carry his baggage once he arrives.  This isn’t something I would be proud of if I was Nahmo, and I would never do that to any of my younger sisters.  I am disappointed in the way that he was acting. At first I figured that since the boys went to school that they would have a good type of perspective on life and family.  But as you can tell, Nahmo as gained a obnoxious role with being to forceful.  I think that Tambu has every right to be mad because Nahmo became a cruel individual. Also I wonder if Tambu will like or dislike going to school, and her situation with her family.

Celebrating Black History Month

It is the beginning of February which means it is Black History Month.  This is a month that we should dedicate toward celebrating certain African Americans who struggled but stayed on that rocky path to succeed.  Most of us would probably just name popular people like Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, and Spike Lee.  Even though, these are some names that have done a lot for the community.  I think that we should do a little more depth research on some of the deceased African-Americans who were idols of our idols today.  For instance, a lot of people don’t know that Granville T. Woods.  Wood’s parents were slaves and he dropped out of school to support his family at the age of 10!!!  I know a lot of you are wondering like how is this relevant, but he was the one invented the train-to-station communication system.  I’m just saying that there is a lot of things that certain African-Americans have done for us, and this is the perfect month to look it up and show appreciation.
During February, I always wrote a paper on how, and what a certain African Americans has done for the community.  I loved reading about how fearless, determined, and how dedicated they were.  Also how they stopped at nothing to strive. Today, while I was going through my early 5th grade days.  I noticed a paper that I wrote with huge bold typed letters across the front, "African-American History Month....George Washington Carver".  I remember being stubborn while writing this paper.  I acted this way because I wanted to write my paper on the greatest basketball player a live named Michael Jordan, but my father wouldn't let me.  He told me that I knew too much about him already (because I loved to wear Michael Jordan shoes) and I would benefit much more on someone that I didn't have a clue about.  And now I have a different out look on what I wrote.  I am proud to say that I have written a paper about George Washington Carver!! He did so much that a lot of people don't really give him credit for.  They may say that he was the man who found out how to make peanuts, but he is known for so much more.  He actually was born a slave.  He lived a very hard life.  He also didn’t go to college until he was thirty years old.  I feel very sorry for him but I also applause him for his determination and his will power to succeed.

Global Issue Paper

Before I lay down, fall asleep, and dream.  I would like to share some important information about my week/weekend dealing with my global issues paper.  This past week in Dr. D’s class, we’ve been working on developing our global issues paper.  We have been working in the writing lab every class period which has been a big plus for us.  Mainly because we have the ability to have a one-on-one conference with her, ask any necessary questions, and have time in class to work on it.  I have had difficulties previous times especially with the literary analysis but now I have a better understanding.  At first I was doubtful of myself because I was worried about how my paper would sound, and it was a new kind of style I wasn’t use to.  Although I asked a lot of questions, and Dr. D helped lead me in a good position.  I also feel very good about my paper, and I probably got a good grade on it as well.
I chose to write my global issues paper on how many innocent people have been sentenced to the death penalty because of certain crimes that they assume they committed.  At first, I had a difficult time choosing my topic but I later found a great topic.  And I appreciate Dr. D and Coach Coco giving us the ability to freelance with our topics.  Mainly because now I have a good visual of how my topic will be constructed and I will be able to portray my argument similar to my literary analysis.  I am looking forward to the process and I have this feeling that my global issues paper will be better than my literary analysis.

Thought on Miss Nikki Giovanni's speech

I was enlightened by Nikki Giovanni’s speech last week at EHS.  I was thinking about it, and she has really opened my eyes.  She spoke about the life of an English professor at Virginia Tech and how difficult of a challenge it is being a writer.  You have to be extremely focused and dedicated as well.  Even though it may be time consuming, you always have to stay on task and be able to handle all of the constructive criticism.  She also spoke about her recent children’s book called, “Rosa”.  Even though it was a children’s book, it told a great story of about how one event changed American History.  She illustrated how Rosa Parks who was a good friend of hers didn’t give into segregation, and made a huge difference in our lives.
Nikki Giovanni really went in depth with describing how bad segregation was back in the day.  She knew many loved ones who were killed by gangs that favored racism.  It was bad that some people didn’t want to open their eyes and see that segregation wasn’t right.  But from the help of some very strong African-Americans such as Martin Luther King, and Rosa Parks have made a big difference in our lives.  I was amazed at how Mrs. Nikki Giovanni portrayed it in a small children’s book.  She wrote a great book, and I am now inspired to strive to become a writer some day.

Eragon

Often times, I stop reading a book because I lose interest and focus on a book.  Although, Eragon has all ways had my attention.  I read this book on the way to basketball practice and on the way back from practice.  I am almost done with the book, and I really have had a good time reading it.  I am kind of down that I am done with this book but I am glad I've accomplished reading it.  I loved the analogies to different stories, and the ways the author portrayed different literary elements.  The author really did a good job of keeping me on my heels the whole time i was reading it.  This may be the second best book that I've ever read(the first LOTF).
I would definitely now offer this book to one of my friends that loves to read long books similar to the hunger games and Lord of The Flies.  Mainly because of the way that the author displays the interesting literary elements.  The author also compared it to other books like Lord Of The Rings type books.  I really think it is a good.  Although, I would only suggest it to the ones that have patience, and focus.

A Constructive Saturday

Usually on weekends, I am going out somewhere with my family and friends to hang out.  Although this weekend, I did nothing but work on cutting down my world history project.  Since my topic on capitol punishment was so broad, my mom told me that I needed to go to the library on Saturday, and read about important topics dealing with Capitol Punishment.  At first I didn't think that I needed to go to the library and read about certain topics in the United States that are over looked (dealing with capitol punishment).  I thought that this would be hard, frustrating, and would eat up my whole Saturday.  But my mom forced me to go, and work constantly.
Even though I sat in the library my whole Saturday.  I actually narrowed my topic to a very interesting argument and found many examples of my topic.  I'm glad that my mother encouraged me, and forced me to take the time out and go to the library because now I am closer to doing my outline.  I read many old news articles, sad stories, and police reports on my topic.  I did a lot of research which was a main reason why I was there so long, but now I am one step ahead.

Reading Response

Today I have just started reading this new book that my cousin insisted that I read called, "Eragon".  At first i didn't know what to expect but after the first couple of pages.  I couldn't put the book down. I read 5 chapters in the book already. I can't wait to continue reading this book.  I enjoyed how the author used imagery through out the book to help you fantasize the adventures they go through.

This book is one that I would defintly offer this book to any of my friends that love adventurus books.  Mainly because I love how the author makes analogies toward different comics..  He relates the story a lot toward these other books.  And if your a fan of star wars and Lord of The Rings, you would be thrilled to read this book.  I haven't read or been that in love with Lord Of The Ringgs, but I still love reading this book.

In Memory of M.L.

Today isn't just any ordinary holiday that we just stay home and sleep all day.  Today is a day of coming together and working along side each other to better the community.  We shouldn’t do this because our parents and elders insist that we participate.  Mainly because, Martin Luther King stood up and made a change in the community.   Dr. Martin Luther King put his life on the line to end segregation.  He led many marches all over the United States.  Mostly all the marches were pertaining to end racial discrimination, unfair laws on African Americans, and the equal treatment for jobs.  Dr. King put up with a lot of hate and crime through out these marches.  He didn’t give in when people were threatening to kill him for trying standing up for what was right.  He ignored them and kept the movement going.  He was a dedicated man who felt as if the world needed to open up their eyes to realize what is right.

Last year, I didn’t realize how important this day is to us.  I didn’t take advantage to go meet new people and bring justice to the community by helping out.  Now since I’ve participated in an event involving a tribute for Martin Luther King, I’m glad that I took the time out to go.  I had a great time with my new friends while recycling trash and painting a wore down elementary school.  I really feel like now I have a made a difference.  Even though, I only made a difference in a couple of kids lives who go to that elementary school, and some animals' lives.  I still made a difference like Dr.King did, and that's why we cherish Martin Luther King day on January 16.

New Beginning

Since its the new year, it is time for a new beginning.  A fresh start and a plan to resolve any bad habits.  My new years resolution is to stop being lazy and strive to improve my grades by one letter grade each.  I haven't had much success from previous years because I haven't stuck through with my resolution.  I didn't have a solid plan toward fulfilling my resolution.  I was doing all of my work and studying last minute.  I also didn't go to my teachers always like I was suppose to, and I began to cram stuff in.  It was horrible and my grades were decreasing drastically.
Although, its not like I did terrible last semester.  I just think that now I can fix my bad habits and increase my working skills.  I also have a strong steady plan to do this.  My plan doesn't just include more studying.  It also includes asking my teachers constantly for advice and help to prepare myself for what ever assignment or test.  And this will definitely change my grades, and help me gain success.
